Lunar New Year is a time for family, food, and togetherness.

On January 23rd, our ResLife team joined forces with other teams I the University and the Students’ Union to organise this year’s Lunar New Year celebration for our students in Lincoln.
What is Lunar New Year?
The Lunar New Year is a holiday that marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, which is the calendar traditionally used in many east Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Singapore and South Korea. In these and other Asian countries, it is one of the most important holidays of the year! Lunar New Year is also commonly referred to as Spring Festival, and begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar, and closes on the full moon. Every Lunar New Year corresponds with an animal from the Chinese zodiac, which consists of 12 animals and cycles through the animals over 12 years. 2023 is the year of the Rabbit.
How we celebrated Lunar New year
As students entered the venue, we gave out red and gold envelopes filled with best wishes and (chocolate) coins! Students could join in with crafting, dumpling making, dancing and general fun and games. There was also lot of lovely food for students to sample and enjoy. Everyone was made to feel part of the celebration and it was great to learn about the traditions of the festival.
It was really great to be a part of the celebration for Luna New Year. It was amazing to see so many students join in – especially those who would normally be celebrating in their home countries, and those who have never celebrated before.
